2012 WORLD UNDER-17 HOCKEY CHALLENGE OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Windsor, ON –  The 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge Host Committee officially declared itself “Open For Business” at a Media Conference held earlier today at the WFCU Centre in Windsor.

Ever since the announcement in July that the prestigious Hockey Canada event was coming to Windsor Essex from December 28, 2011 to January 7, 2012, the Host Committee has been working to put infrastructure in place for the event featuring 5 teams representing Canada (Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, West, Pacific), and 5 international squads (USA, Czech Republic, Russia, Germany, Sweden).

The official game schedule was released today and includes 10 games at each of the WFCU Centre, the Vollmer Culture and Recreational Complex in LaSalle, and Tecumseh Arena. The UCCU Complex in Amherstburg and the Essex Sports Centre Complex will play host to exhibition games.  The Bronze and Gold Medal games will be played in Windsor.

The 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge logo was officially revealed today by Windsor Spitfires’ Co-owner and Governor Peter Dobrich, who is also the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge Event Chair. He also spoke about the “Paint The Town Red and White” program and encouraged fans and business owners to embrace the event to generate national pride in the same manner as the Vancouver Olympics.

Event mascot Puckster was introduced today and will be spotted at minor hockey games, schools and charity events in Windsor Essex. There was also a call for event volunteers and local business sponsors with more information available under the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge section of www.hockeycanada.ca.

Five Canadian teams, five international teams, and the future of Canadian Hockey on display; it’s all happening this winter in Windsor Essex, and with ticket sales starting October 4^th, it’s “Open For Business” for the Host Committee of the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

October 14th Benefit for Windsor's Own Darren Banks and Family

Darren's family have lost EVERYTHING in a house fire and we are working to get them back on their feet. Darren's mother is reportedly doing a bit better, keep them in your prayers and I hope everybody can make it out to this!

 

There will be Pasta, Garlic Bread and salad served for dinner.

 

Please come out as the Banks family has lost everything in this terrible house fire and any donations will be accepted!

Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy Receives Several Awards

Several Winners and TEAM CANADA 3-peats!!!

The Students of the Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy received several awards this past Saturday in a tournament held in Warren Michigan. The tournament brought a wide range of grapplers, which included Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners, wrestlers and MMA fighters.

The medal tally at the end of the event was 14 Gold, 7 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.

It should be noted that the Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy also received the Most Supportive School.

Following the tournament was another very exciting match-up as members from Team Canada and from Team USA battled it out for honour.  The country vs country match up was well received and kept the audience riveted to the very end as after 12 matches, it was tied at 6 a piece.  The hero of the day, Marco Carbone in the heavy weight division, battled hard and took Team Canada to victory for the third year in a row.  Team Canada consisted of students from the Windsor Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy with Instructor Ron Dupuis and from the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy of Windsor and Instructor Jeff Robert (yes 2 different schools).

WFCU CENTRE SELECTED TO HOST 2012 SKATE CANADA SYNCHRONIZED SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS

First time to be held in Windsor – and first ever Skate Canada event

to be executed by a Local Organizing Committee

Windsor, ON – Global Spectrum Facility Management, in conjunction with Skate Canada, announced today that Windsor, Ontario will host the 2012 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships at the WFCU Centre February 23 through February 25, 2012. This is the first time the city has hosted this event, and it is also the first time that the Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships will be planned and executed by a Local Organizing Committee.

“Western Ontario has proven over and over again that they have some of the best figure skating fans in the country,” said William Thompson, Skate Canada CEO. “Fans can expect entertaining competition in every category and with the top two senior teams qualifying for the 2012 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships it will certainly be an exciting event.”

“We are thrilled to have been selected to work with Skate Canada as the host skating community for the 2012 National Synchronized Skating Championships. The Local Organizing Committee, represented by the Sun Parlour Skating Region, Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island and the WFCU Centre, promises to bring a first class event to the region in February 2012. This event will have a positive impact on our local economy and we look forward to the opportunity to enhance our relationship with Skate Canada and our image as a Sports Tourism destination” said the Local Organizing Committee.

The 2012 Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships will bring approximately 1,000 skaters from across the country to the city. The event will bring in excess of $800,000 to the area and use approximately 1,000 hotel room nights.

Teams will compete for national titles in the senior, junior, open, intermediate and novice categories. The top two senior teams will represent Canada at the 2012 ISU World Synchronized Skating Championships in Gothenburg, Sweden from April 13-14, 2012.

Skate Canada, the national governing body responsible for the development and administration of skating in Canada, is the largest figure skating association in the world. With over 4,800 registered coaches, skating programs for athletes of all ages are offered at nearly 1,300 skating clubs and schools across the country. Skate Canada is an association dedicated to providing every Canadian the opportunity to learn life skills while experiencing the power, strength and creativity of one of Canada's premier sports.

In 2011, Skate Canada produced two world champions, Patrick Chan in senior men’s and Andrei Rogozine in junior men’s. 2010 Olympic Champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir won the world ice dance silver medal.

Canadian Women’s Hockey League "Stick It To Cancer" Comes to Windsor

The Breast Ride Ever, a not-for-profit organization in its second year, has partnered with the Canadian Women’s Hockey League to bring Stick It To Cancer! to Windsor, ON, Canada November 25-27, 2011. Windsor/Essex County enjoys an eclectic mix of things to explore such as a unique shoreline, world class regional wines, unique culinary experiences, parks, festivals, and historic sites~ something for everyone! We are very proud to offer the opportunity to watch some of the best female hockey players in the world face off in Windsor, ON on November 26th and November 27th, 2011, for a great cause.


The Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) is a not-for-profit organization the league is dedicated to raising the profile of women’s hockey while providing a place for the best female hockey players in Canada – and around the world – to train and compete. The league offers fans an international-grade showcase for the most talented female hockey players, at an affordable price. Our game is speed, finesse and skill. The CWHL is entering its fourth season as the premiere Women’s hockey league in the world. Since its inception in 2007, the Canadian Women's Hockey League has fully supported its teams in full seasons of home/away games, as well as charity and exhibition games in the community. Each season has culminated in an exciting playoff tournament where the top teams play-off for the Clarkson Cup.

The CWHL is a player-driven, centrally-funded league, which means every team in the league receives equal access to funding and is provided the same opportunities to succeed. Every dollar donated goes towards building a league that is dedicated to raising the profile of women’s hockey while providing a place where the best female hockey players from around the world can compete.

The CWHL houses players from many backgrounds, including Olympians, National Teams, and many have played for Canadian and American Universities and Colleges across North America. The options for female hockey players are vast and it is important to us as players to help share those options and opportunities with young players every chance they get. As players growing up and having travelled their own paths in hockey, they feel very fortunate to have had many people help and inspire them to reach their goals. CWHL Outreach games are an avenue to share with the rest of Ontario what the league has to offer, and hopefully help to inspire young females to follow their dreams and see what they have to strive for as they continue playing.

Stick It To Cancer will provide spectators the opportunity to enjoy elite women’s hockey, while also providing the opportunity for the players to give back and raise awareness and funds for a very worthy cause. The Breast Ride Ever, a not- for profit organization, is dedicated to raising awareness about Breast Cancer and early detection and additional funds that stay local here in Windsor/Essex County. Together with the support of many towards these efforts, The Breast Ride Ever has held a number of events including its annual motorcycle Poker Run throughout the Windsor and Essex County area. This message is vitally important as Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Canadian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer). In Canada in 2011 an estimated 23,400 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer (5,100 will die of it)and an estimated 190 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer (55 will die of it). One in nine women is expected to develop Breast Cancer during their lifetime and one in twenty-nine will die of it. For Ontario women, Breast Cancer is the most frequently diagnosed type of Cancer, and Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of Cancer deaths, after Lung Cancer. http://www.cancer.ca/

Stick It To Cancer! will feature two CWHL league games Montreal vs. Toronto at the historic Windsor Arena 572 McDougall Street Windsor, ON N9A 3H6 Canada which seats 4500 spectators. Montreal’s number one draft pick Meghan Agosta, along with Julie Chu, Caroline Ouellette, Kim St.Pierre, Lisa Marie Breton, and from Toronto’s Sami Jo Small ,Tessa Bonhomme, Britni Smith, Jess Scanzano will be playing to name a few. Team rosters will be available and posted on the CWHL website: www.cwhl.ca soon.

Tickets will be available for purchase online at www.thebreastrideever.com. The proceeds from this event will benefit the Windsor & Essex Cancer Centre Foundation( the fundraising arm of the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre) for the purchase of a Endobronchial Ultrasound for Cancer diagnostics and for their Seeds4Hope Cancer Research Program), and The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County for community-based services.
