TORONTO, ON - This morning the National Basketball League of Canada announced that Chris Commons of the Windsor Express has been named the Recharge with Milk Player of the Week for the week ending December 30, 2012.

In Monday’s championship game, Patrice Bergeron (Sillery, Que./HC Lugano, SUI) scored once and added three assists for Canada, which led 3-1 after one period and 5-1 after two en route to its second five-goal victory over the tournament hosts in five days. Canadian captain Ryan Smyth (Banff, Alta./Edmonton, NHL) and John Tavares (Oakville, Ont./SC Bern, SUI) had two goals each, while Derrick Walser (New Glasgow, N.S./Rapperswil-Jona, SUI) and Jason Spezza (Toronto, Ont./Rapperswil-Jona, SUI) also scored.

Devan Dubnyk (Calgary, Alta./Edmonton, NHL) made 28 saves in the Canadian goal to record his third win of the tournament. Canada jumped on HC Davos early, opening the scoring just 46 seconds in and taking a 3-0 lead nine minutes into the first period on goals from Bergeron, Walser and Smyth.

Canada finished first in the Cattini Group in the preliminary round, which included a 5-0 win over HC Davos and a 2-1 overtime loss to Adler Mannheim (Germany), earning it a bye into the semifinals, where it defeated HC Fribourg-Gottéron (Switzerland) 5-1 on Sunday.

Canada’s National Men’s Team roster for the 2012 Spengler Cup is comprised of Canadian players currently playing in Europe, as well as players available due to the NHL lockout.

Canada has now appeared in 10 of the last 13 championship games. In addition to this year, Canada’s National Men’s Team also won the Spengler Cup in 1984, 1986, 1987, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2007.

WINDSOR CLASSIC 411

The cancellation of the Bridgestone Winter Classic that was to be held in just over a months’ time at Michigan Stadium between The Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings caused much sadness with many of our hockey starved clients, Consultants and partners. But with misfortune arises opportunity.

We are pleased to announce that the Classic lives on! No, it’s not at an open air stadium that would set attendance records and it won’t feature a professional game between the Maple Leafs and Red Wings. The battle between the Leafs/Wings will be taken up by the fans over two days on Riverside Drive.

We are pleased to announce that we are hosting The Windsor Classic presented by Investors Group this December 28th and 29th between Ferry Street and Ouellette Avenue on Riverside Drive West. The Windsor Classic is a two day street hockey event for players aged 5 and up and all skill levels. Registered players and teams will choose to represent the Maple Leafs or Red Wings. There will be approximately 54 games being played over the course of the event. Each game is for fun and organized by age group. One cumulative score will be kept over the duration of the event between the Leafs and Wings.

Each registered participant will be required to donate a minimum of $10 to The Downtown Mission. However, everyone is encouraged to fundraise beyond the minimum for fantastic prizes to be revealed in the next coming weeks.

Players can register individually or register a full team. A full team consists of 8 players and a goalie. Registration of teams and players can be done through The Downtown Mission website: www.downtownmission.com.

Grab your fellow fans from your hockey team. Get your co-workers together to finally solve the water cooler Leafs/Wings battle. Parents organize a team for the neighbourhood kids or their minor hockey team. Let’s leave it all on the streets and support a great cause.

All proceeds from The Windsor Classic go to The Downtown Mission of Windsor.

WINDSOR DECLARES MARCEL PRONOVOST DAY

The City of Windsor and Biblioasis proudly present the inaugural MARCEL PRONOVOST DAY to celebrate the career of the 8-TIME STANLEY CUP CHAMPION and the only HOCKEY HALL OF FAMER to call Windsor home.

WALKERVILLE BREWERY
525 Argyle Rd, Windsor
Tuesday November 20
7-9 PM
Books will be available for signing.

About Marcel Pronovost and A Life in Hockey
“Marcel was the most underrated defenceman ever to play in the league. When he hit you, you were hit. He was a tremendous skater and defensively, he was as good as anyone. He might have been overlooked by the press, but he was never overlooked by his teammates. Years later, I brought him back to Detroit as a coach. He is very knowledgeable and a very astute observer of the game.”—Hall of Fame left-winger Ted Lindsay (Pronovost’s teammate from 1949-57 and 1964-65)

In the spring of 1950, Marcel Pronovost was called up from the minor leagues to play for the Detroit Red Wings during the Stanley Cup playoffs. The 18-year-old defenceman had never seen NHL ice time before, but his performance in the playoffs was so impressive that he took regular turns in the final series against the New York Rangers. That year, Marcel Provonost became the ninth player in history to win a Stanley Cup before playing a single regular-season NHL game.

So began Pronovost’s 65-year career in pro hockey. As a Red Wing he became a star defenceman in Detroit’s golden age, winning three more Stanley Cups between 1952 and 1955, and skating side-by-side with Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, and Terry Sawchuk (who became a lifelong friend). He played a pivotal role in the Toronto Maple Leafs' last Stanley Cup win in 1967. He earned recognition on the NHL's First and Second All-Star Teams. And he has continued to serve the game for decades, becoming one of the few NHLers to have success as a player, a coach, and as a scout.

Now, with Marcel Pronovost: A Life in Hockey, this legendary defenceman and Hockey Hall of Famer tells these and other stories for the first time. With over 125 photos and with on-the-ice recollections from the most exciting Original Six Era games ever played, A Life in Hockey is a hard-hitting memoir, and an insider’s take on playing, coaching, and scouting that spans seven decades, and surveys one of the longest hockey careers of all time. A must-have autobiography for Red Wings fans, Leafs fans, and hockey buffs everywhere.

Available with a Red Wings cover, a Leafs cover, and in a limited edition split Leafs/Wings signed hardcover edition. Paperbacks are $22.95; signed ltd. edition hardcovers are $39.95.

WINDSOR EXPRESS LOSE 84-83 TO OSHAWA POWER

(WINDSOR, ON) After a huge win in their home opener Friday night, the Windsor Express came up a sliver short 84-83 Saturday night against the visiting Oshawa Power.

Trailing by 16 points late in the game, the Express battled all the way back cutting the large margin thanks in part by some great rebounding by Kevin Loiselle and strong court control by captain Mike Helms.

With the crowd cheering them on at the WFCU, Windsor proved they can keep up with any team in the league.

"They started playing. It took them 36 minutes to start playing and it took the coach time to find the right combination," said Windsor coach Bill Jones.

Leading the way for Windsor offensively were University of Windsor product Greg Surmacz with 16 points and 11 rebounds, 10 of those defensively. Helms added 15 including three, three-point bombs, and Anthony Johnson had 12.

"I was disappointed because I hate to lose. Our goal was to win the fourth quarter," said Jones.

The lose has Windsor's National Basketball League of Canada's record at an even 1-1 which they have an opportunity to take against the Power in a rematch Saturday in Oshawa.

For the Power, who were playing in their first game of the season, Nick Okorie led the way with 16 points. Oshawa was up 44-38 at the half. Windsor outscored the Power a whopping 30-17 in the final period.

According to assistant coach Gerry Brumpton, "Windsor shot over 50 percent in the final quarter."

Windsor hosts Summerside Storm on Friday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m and again on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Windsor Express - ISSAC IS HAPPY TO BE BACK IN WINDSOR

(WINDSOR, ON) The Windsor Express held a press conference today at the St. Denis Centre, University of Windsor. They officially welcomed Isaac Kuon back home and to the Windsor Express.

Dartis Willis, President and CEO of Windsor Express talked about his interaction with Isaac from last season’s All- Star game. He said Isaac understood very early on that nothing was given to him, everything must be earned. Mr. Willis said, “It really begin to hit home that we had the opportunity to bring home, not only a kid with a great attitude but, a kid with a great level of skill; someone that understood what professional basketball is all about. Isaac was a leader on his team and stepped right up to help his team get into the play-offs. We were really excited about some of the things he accomplished in such a small amount of time. We attribute that to self determination and what the coach instilled in him.” Mr. Willis ended stating, “Isaac gives the average kid hopes of playing professional basketball in their city with The National Basketball League of Canada. There is great talent not only in Canada but, right here in Windsor.”

Chris Oliver, head coach of the Men’s Lancers team at the University of Windsor thanked Mr. Willis and the Windsor Express for bringing this “wonderful opportunity to the basketball program and community as well.” Coach Oliver went on to tell a short story of when he first found out Isaac was coming to Windsor by way of some of his former coaches and teachers, “basically saying that he would have no chance of graduating. He wasn’t capable of getting that done.” Coach Oliver went on, “The two proudest moments of my life with Isaac were seeing him graduate from college and seeing him get his Canadian citizenship finally and both of those things happened last year. They happened because of some of the hard work from people in this community.” Then, he passed the reigns to Coach Jones.

A condition of Coach Jones’s contract was a promise from Windsor Express to do everything they could to bring Isaac Kuon back home. “I met Isaac last Thursday and he is a tremendous kid.” He went on, “Coach Oliver got him to this point, now it’s my job to go ahead and develop him and get him to reach what his ultimate goal is and that’s to reach his full potential as a professional basketball player.”

Isaac said he didn’t write a speech for the occasion but, showed some heartfelt gratitude to the Coach Oliver. He said, “When I came here, I told Coach Oliver I wanted to play professional basketball.” Coach capitalized on Isaac’s potential and work ethic spending extra hours and Saturdays conditioning him to reach his goal. Isaac realizes that his main achievement was not being drafted but, developing as a person due to the time and effort given him by the Windsor community. “The people took me in as their adopted son. They really supported me. That support afforded me the chance to be better on the court and obviously to graduate,” he continued gratefully. As for his new role with the team he said, “I’m very excited to be with the Windsor Express. I can take what I learned from the Millrats and help this team. I am a veteran now.” Isaac told the room about the conversations he and Mr. Willis had saying they had to, “Make sure that we get guys that are not Prima Donnas; not afraid to get out into the community. I learned that from Coach Oliver. He had us helping out in the community quite often.” Isaac gave recognition to a fellow Lancer’s professional basketball aspirations before stepping off to the side to answer questions from the media.

Windsor Express will play their opening game at the WFCU Centre on November 2, 2012 against last season’s Championship runner up, the Halifax Rainmen.

Mr. Willis believes the dance team is an aspect that is vital to the entertainment component of the game. Mr. Willis has hired Northstar Cheer to recruit, train, and choreograph routines for the dance team. He stated, “After their stunning performance at our first press conference, we wanted to be on their team”.

Chris Mendes, General Manager for The Windsor Express said, “We are expecting a huge response, over 300 ladies. We want the public to get involved. Local judges will help decide who makes the final cut down to 10 ladies”.

Connie Day, coordinator of events for Northstar Cheer, is very excited about putting together the dance team. She said, “The ladies will have to be good communicators, outgoing, and beautiful inside and out. They will need to possess a desire to help the community because when it boils down to it, that’s what it’s all about; what positive impact can your role have on others”. Connie says she plans to help the girls “build their dossier” so they can be their own brand. “Our expectations are high,” she remarked, “But, we plan to develop them in ways they would not have imagined.”

Connie used to be a dancer with a company that was started by Cheryl McCurdy, owner of Northstar Cheer. She has several years of experience coordinating multifaceted events. The candidates must be able to attend both auditions. There will be a mixer for the ladies and judges after Open Auditions, 9.16.12. Final Call back is the evening of the Invite Only Audition, 9.23.12 and will be open for the public to help determine the final 10. The team is looking for a venue to host the Final Call Back event.

NEW SEASON, NEW OWNERS FOR CANADIENS

In Play Magazine
Belle River—The Jr. C Belle River Canadiens will start the 2012-13 hockey season with new owners.

The team was purchased by Cypher Systems Group and will join the LaSalle Jr. B Vipers as part of its sports division.

“This is good news for the team,” says former Canadiens owner Greg McDonough. “The time has come for me to move on and pass the reins to some new blood. It is a great move for the team and for our community. The new owners are also local so it’s great news for hockey in Essex County.”

Cypher Systems Group executive John Savage says very little is expected to change under its ownership. “The Canadiens are a great club with a storied history and a strong, loyal fan base. We are committed to building on this. And as with the Vipers, the Canadiens have an outstanding group of volunteers for which they are forever indebted.”

Savage says Cypher Systems Group has a diverse group of companies but with deep roots in Essex County. “We give back to our communities in a variety of ways; supporting and helping develop and maintain hometown hockey is just one of them. These junior hockey teams are an integral part of the Canadian fabric and we feel privileged to be a part of it.”

Canadiens GM and Coach Mark Seguin looks forward to keeping his focus on the ice. “We have a strong team and we will continue to play hockey at the highest level possible. CSG is a great organization I am looking forward to this partnership both with the owners and with the Vipers.”

CANADIAN WHO DEDICATED HALF A CENTURY TO YOUTH HOCKEY WINS 2012 BRIDGESTONE MARK MESSIER YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD

In Play Magazine

LOS ANGELES (June 4, 2012) – For fifty years, Robert “Knobby” Knudsen has been a name synonymous with youth hockey in Windsor, Ontario. For his leadership, vision and selfless dedication, he has been selected as the recipient of the 2012 Bridgestone Mark Messier Youth Leadership Award.

Knudsen, who passed away last November, was a founding member of the Windsor Minor Hockey Association. He was so devoted to the sport that he even took out a second mortgage on his own home to keep the fledgling league alive. Over the years, his love of the sport touched thousands of young hockey players in Canada, and the positive impact he has had in his community is unquestioned.

The Bridgestone Mark Messier Youth Leadership Award was created to reward youth hockey players or mentors for their leadership and contributions to youth hockey or education. Nominations for the award were received from across North America. The award, which includes a $5,000 grant from Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (Bridgestone Americas), was presented tonight by hockey legend Mark Messier before Game 3 of the Stanley

Cup® Final. The funds will be used for the continued support of the “Knobby’s Kids” program founded by Mr. Knudsen. “It is really important that individuals like Robert Knudsen be recognized for the positive impact they have had on lives of impressionable young children,” Messier said. “For that reason, I am proud to lend my name to this award. I am thrilled that ‘Knobby’s Kids’ will continue to benefit from his lifetime of dedication to youth hockey.”
Mr. Knudsen’s legacy includes being recognized not only in youth hockey but also as a volunteer in baseball and football in addition to being a member of the Windsor Hall of Fame. To honor him and his work with youth, September 20 has been designated “Knobby Knudsen” day in Windsor.

His Kids Skate for Kids program, launched nine years ago, was a skating marathon for kids to help raise money for a roof to be added to an outdoor rink at Lanspeary Park in Windsor. This event included former NHL® players Bob Probert and Bob Boughner who came out to support the cause. This program became known as “Knobby’s Kids” and grew to help raise money for kids who couldn’t afford hockey equipment, to provide them with free ice time and instruction, and to help fund “graduates” who go on to play in the Windsor Minor Hockey Association. What started out with 20 kids has grown to include over 160 kids aged 2-13 years old, and has provided free equipment to children on Native American reservations and to children in communities as far away as Russia. Mr. Knudsen viewed his formation of “Knobby’s Kids” as is greatest accomplishment.

His tireless fundraising, coaching and organizing paved the way for thousands of kids to play hockey. The Windsor Minor Hockey Association and WESPY both have volunteer awards named for Mr. Knudsen, “The one quote my dad always said and firmly believed in was ‘kids in sports stay out of courts,’” said Robert Knudsen Jr. “And it meant the world to him to know that he was important in the life of a child. Our
community, both in Windsor and the youth hockey community, lost a legend last November when my father passed, but this award will help make sure his memory will live forever. It is truly a fitting tribute to his legacy.”

“Congratulations to the Knudsen family and to the memory of Knobby Knudsen, a truly deserving honoree who had an enormous impact on the community he lived in,” said Phil Pacsi, Vice President, Customer Marketing and Training, Bridgestone Americas. “While Mr. Knudsen could not be here with us, we are grateful to have the chance to celebrate the life of someone who gave so much of themselves in order for Canadian youth hockey to thrive.”

LaSalle – The LaSalle Vipers are pleased to announce that Cam Crowder will be joining Scott Lehman as assistant coach for the 2012-13 season.

The son of former Boston Bruins player and NHL Hockey Hall of Famer, Keith Crowder, Cam established himself as a player in his own right during his four years with the Essex 73’s. During that time, his team won two Clarence Schmalz Cups and three Great Lakes titles.

“I have known Cam for years,” says Vipers General Manager, Kevin McIntosh. “He brings a solid work ethic to our team. We are very proud to have Cam as part of our Vipers family.”

Cam has distinguished himself as a coach of several minor teams in the area, including Windsor AAA, Essex Bantam and the Alliance U17 development camp.

“Cam is a very mature, well spoken young man with ties to both local business and local hockey,” says Vipers Head Coach, Ryan Donally. “Since playing with the Essex 73's, Cam has taken a very progressive approach in his desire to coach – like working on his high performance certification. Scott Lehman and I are very pleased to have Cam join us on the bench. This completes what I feel will be a very strong coaching staff.”
