18th Annual Hockey for Hospice tournament scores a big win

The 18^th annual Hockey for Hospice tournament has hit a new milestone– 100 participating teams.

Originally conceived as a skate-a-thon by tournament founder, Tim Beaulieu, Hockey for Hospice has grown each year from its humble beginnings. This year’s edition– being played from Dec. 27-29– will include a schedule of 210 games being played at six different arenas over three days. Divisions include Novice, Atom, PeeWee, Bantam, Atom Girls and PeeWee Girls.

Teams from across Windsor and Essex County, as well as teams from Wallaceburg, Tilbury and Chatham-Kent, will see on-ice action for a good cause. All players participating in the tournament raise pledges for The Hospice. Over the past 17 years, these hockey-playing Hospice heroes have raised over $1.6 million. 

“The kids who play in this tournament always go above and beyond,” said Carol Derbyshire, executive director of The Hospice. “It never ceases to amaze me how much effort they put into collecting pledge money and how eager they are to learn about The Hospice and where their pledges are going.”

The Hockey for Hospice tournament will be played at the United Communities Credit Union Complex in Amherstburg, Vollmer Recreational Complex in LaSalle, Tecumseh Arena, Adie Knox Arena in Windsor, Forest Glade Arena and the WFCU Centre. Tournament games begin Friday, Dec. 27 at 8 a.m.

WINDSOR EXPRESS KEEP ROLLING ALONG

(WINDSOR, ONTARIO) Windsor's 16 point first quarter lead held throughout as the Express finished off the Moncton Miracles 115-101 on Sunday afternoon.

The Express (9-4) took a 36-20 advantage after one and never looked back, despite Moncton (2-12) cutting the deficit to four at one point.

Once again, Stefan Bonneau led the team with 24 points and contributed 10 rebounds.

Chris Commons celebrated his birthday with 21 points, while Quinnel Brown and DeAndre Thomas each had 19.

Moncton received 19 points from Travis George and Johnny Mayhane.

It will be a while before the Express return to the WFCU Centre.

The team plays Wednesday, December 11th in Mississauga before embarking on an east coast road trip, that features three games in four days.

The next Windsor home game is Friday, December 20th, when the Halifax Rainmen visit for a 7:00pm start.

FAST START, STRONG FINISH LEADS WINDSOR TO VICTORY

(LONDON, ONTARIO) Windsor's forth straight win may have been it's most impressive.

The Express (8-4) marched into the Budweiser Gardens on Saturday night and stole a 117-111 victory in London (8-4).

Windsor started on a 29-8 run and finished the first quarter with a 35-19 advantage.

London took charge in the second and third quarter, and took a two point lead into the final frame, before Windsor outscored them 33-25 to seal the win.

The NBL's leading scorer, Stefan Bonneau, added to his already impressive start to the year with a game high 32 points for Windsor.

Chris Commons (24), Darren Duncan (23) and Quinnel Brown (21) also scored twenty-plus points in the effort.

Commons had eight rebounds and Duncan added nine assists.

London was led by Garret Williamson's 27 points.

The next Express game is tomorrow, Sunday, December 8th at 2:00pm against the Moncton Miracles.

It's "Teacher Appreciation Day" where all teachers get into the game for only $2, just by showing their union card.

Belle River Canadiens Name Rob Serviss Head Coach

Mark Seguin to retain General Manager duties

The Belle River Canadiens are excited to announce the hiring of Robb Serviss as head coach.

Serviss, 51, is a Windsor-native but holds dual citizenship with the Netherlands. He played for the Windsor Royals and the University of Windsor before a professional hockey career in the Netherlands that spanned more than a decade (1987-1999).

He served as player-coach from 1991-1993 before becoming the coach of the Netherlands U-20 team following his retirement as a player. He served in that capacity from 1999 until 2011, and served as an assistant coach on the Netherlands national team at the World Championships Division 1 tournament in 2010-11.

“We are excited to add someone with Robb’s experience in the game to our coaching staff,” Canadiens owner Stephen Savage said. “He joins an experienced coaching and front office staff. We are thrilled to be able to add another great hockey mind to our organization.”

The move to hire Serviss will allow Mark Seguin, the current GM/Coach to focus on GM duties. With the move to a new arena –currently under construction – the timing was right to make the change.

“Mark is going to have a lot on his plate between now and September with us moving into our new facility,” Savage said. “He can work to build our club into an elite program, with the new arena as a focal point. We want players to be excited to play their junior hockey in Lakeshore.”

“Work commitments and time constraints have made it difficult to hold down both positions,” Seguin said. “I look forward to working with Robb and the wealth of coaching experience he brings.”

The Canadiens next game, and Serviss’ Canadiens head coaching debut, comes Friday night on the road in Dresden against the Kings. Their next home game is Dec. 13 when they host the Mooretown Flags.

WINDSOR EXPRESS PAIR WITH CLOTHESLINE DRIVE

Bring your unused clothes and household items to Sunday's home game

(WINDSOR, ONTARIO) The Windsor Express are asking fans to do their part and help those in need, this Sunday, December 8th.

  

The Express will host the Moncton Miracles at 2:00pm at the WFCU Centre and are asking fans to bring with them any gently used products to help the Clothesline Drive - an initiative of the Canadian Diabetes Association.

  

The Clothesline Drive will collect any clothing, electronics or small household items, along with blankets, bedding, sleeping bags or footwear.

The drive has helped nearly 9 million Canadians living with diabetes or pre-diabetes since 1985.

WINDSOR EXPRESS OVERWHELM POWER

(MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO) DeAndre Thomas scored 27 points in just over 28 minutes, leading the charge in Windsor's 102-85 win over Mississauga on Wednesday night.

Thomas also had 10 rebounds in his dominating performance, helping the Express (7-4) to their third straight victory.

Windsor was up 39-35 after a subpar first half, but rallied to score 33 points in the 3rd quarter and 30 in the final frame.

At one point in the 4th, the Express lead ballooned to 21 points.

Stefan Bonneau finished with 21 points and 9 assists.

Quinnel Brown had a game high 14 rebounds, as Windsor outboarded the Power 60-41.

Kirk Williams Jr. had 21 points in the loss for Mississauga (4-8).

Windsor gets set for another edition of their 401 rivalry with the London Lightning at Budweiser Gardens on Saturday, December 7th at 7:00pm.

EXPRESS SWEEP HOME AND HOME

(WINDSOR, ONTARIO) A 34-point third quarter helped Windsor  (6-4) rebound from a lackluster start and close out the Ottawa Skyhawks (5-5) 88-85 on Sunday afternoon.

The Express were behind by 9 points at the half, but caught fire in the third, at one point scoring in eight straight possessions.

DeAndre Thomas muscled his way to 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, while Quinnel Brown got back on track with a 21 point performance of his own.

Darren Duncan dished out a game high 12 assists.

Jermaine Johnson was Ottawa's leading scorer, dropping 19 points.

The Express head up the 401 on Wednesday, December 4th for a game against the Mississauga Power at 7:00pm.

The next Windsor home game is Sunday, December 8th  when the Moncton Miracles make their only appearance at the WFCU Centre this season. Tip off is 2:00pm.

Windsor Express Guard drops 33, Windsor flies past Skyhawks 105-102

(OTTAWA, ONTARIO) The Windsor Express are enjoying their visits to Ottawa.

The Express took a 12 point lead into the fourth quarter and held on, beating the Skyhawks 105-102, for their second win in two tries in the nation's capital.

Stefan Bonneau was up to his usual antics, posting 33 points on 12-for-18 shooting from the field and 6-for-10 behind the arc.

After Windsor posted their worst shooting percentage of the season in Monday's loss to Brampton, they rebounded with one of their best, making 48.2% of their shots from the floor tonight.

Darren Duncan led the team with 11 rebounds and four assists and added 20 points.

Chris Commons steadily delivered 25 points himself.

The victory stops a two game losing streak for the Express and gives them a 5-4 record after the first month of the season.

The loss drops Ottawa to a similar 5-4 mark.

Windsor and Ottawa will play the back half of their home and home series on Sunday, December 1st at the WFCU Centre. Tip off is 2:00pm.

KidSport Windsor Assists 54 Under-Resourced Children; Surpasses First Milestone

Gift of Sport Holiday Campaign to Help Kids Get in the Game!

Windsor, Ontario. KidSport Windsor is pleased to announce that it has reached and surpassed the first milestone in the Chapter’s existence by awarding 54 grants to local under-resourced children in the area. “Thanks to generous gifts of sponsors and donors in our community like Biz X Magazine, Bentall Kennedy (Windsor Crossing) and Boston Pizza, we were able to raise then award $19,945 in funds locally to under-resourced children,” said KidSport Co-Chair, Chuck Smith.

Recently, dreams came true for local family, the Johnson’s where Amy, mother of 6 experienced extensive barriers to sport participation. “As a full-time law student and single mother, the cost is quite prohibitive for my children to play sports. Thanks to KidSport, my sons Theodore, Michael and Keon will be able to play basketball with Core City Hoops and Levi, with Legion Track and Field.” KidSport does more than remove barriers to participation, it creates a foundation for lifelong well-being. “Children are provided with the opportunity to feel and be a part of something bigger than themselves, which is critical to healthy childhoods and productive citizenry,” said Amy Johnson.

Since it’s inception during the KidSport Windsor Family Day Event on Monday, February 18, 2013, KidSport’s number have grown in several diverse ways. The division of 54 represents 30 boys and 24 girls, average age of 7 onto which 36 aboriginal youth belonging to the Can-Am Indian Friendship Centre received the Gift of Sport for the first time, 2 of which went to win a championship with Windsor Minor Lacrosse Association only after picking-up a stick 3 months earlier for the first time. “Thank you for helping us get into Lacrosse,” said Jace Tyler (9). “After we won, we got medals, pizza and pop!”

Next on the docket for KidSport Windsor is the Gift of Sport Holiday Campaign. It is a national fundraising campaign taking place November 20 to January 10, 2013, and raises money, so all Canadian kids have an opportunity to play organized sport. “We are very proud to be part of the solution in helping more children across Canada access sport, become more active, and share the pleasure of sport with others,” said the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport). “Our Government is pleased to support KidSport in making a real difference in the lives of many young Canadians.”

WINDSOR EXPRESS GET REVENGE

(WINDSOR, ONTARIO) Darren Duncan's double-double over 36 minutes paced the Windsor Express to a 90-86 victory over the Island Storm on Thursday night.

The Express (4-2) get some revenge on the Storm (4-3), who eliminated them in the post season last year.

The game was also the first time this season Windsor has played outside the Central Division.

Duncan posted 20 points and 12 assists, hitting key free throws down the stretch and finishing 14-for-19 from the charity stripe.

The 12 assists were also a season high for the guard.

Chris Commons battled for 21 points and for the second straight game, Stefan Bonneau was the team's leading scorer - this time with nine boards.

The Storm's, Greg Plummer, had a game high 22 in the loss.

Windsor welcomes their 401 rivals, the London Lightning to the WFCU Centre on Friday, November 23rd at 7:00pm.

The season series between the two foes is tied at 1-1.

EXPRESS TO PLAY AT CAESARS WINDSOR

(WINDSOR, ONTARIO) The Windsor Express are thrilled to announce their regular season game at 7:00pm on Wednesday, January 15th will be played at the award winning Colosseum at Caesars Windsor for an ALL AGES event.

The Express will take on the two-time defending champion, London Lightning for this historic event for the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL).

This will be the first time in NBL history a game will be played at a world-class entertainment venue, like Caesars Windsor.

Mary Riley, Vice President of Marketing at Caesars Windsor, said, "Caesars Windsor is thrilled for this opportunity to team up with Windsor Express for the first of this kind of sporting event in the Colosseum. It's not only a great way to showcase our local basketball team but also the versatility of our venue which has been host to hundreds of headline music and entertainment shows and now the excitement of a live basketball game."

Dartis Willis, President and CEO of the Windsor Express, said, "This is another opportunity for us to bring the community together for an event we can all be proud of. Express Fall on Bucket with 2.2 Seconds Left

(BRAMPTON, ONTARIO) Jameson Tipping hit a jumper with 2.2 seconds left as the Brampton A's (5-2) slipped past Windsor (3-2) 105-103.

A layup from Stefan Bonneau did everything but drop in the net at the buzzer, sealing Windsor's fate.

The loss drops the Express to 1-2 on the road this season.

Bonneau was impressive on both ends of the court, collecting 22 points and helping with 11 rebounds.

Chris Commons led all scorers with 33 points on 14-for-22 shooting, including 4-for-7 from three point range.

Windsor was also helped by 16 points and nine rebounds from Darren Duncan.

The Express are back at the WFCU Centre on Thursday, November 21st to face the team that ended their postseason run last season, the Island Storm.

Tip off is 7:00pm.

WMHA Wins Tournament

Congratulations to the WMHA Midget Minor AA team, sponsored by Windsor Club 240 in winning the Centre Wellington Tournament this weekend.  They played several teams from the GTHL and beat the Toronto Eagles 2-1 in the Championship game!  Ryan Proulx and Alex Saliba both scored and Alex was named the Tournament MVP!  Congratulations to Head Coach Mike Charron, his staff and all the players!  Well Done!

WMHA WINS...TWICE

I am pleased to announce that the WMHA had two teams win tournaments this past weekend. The Bantam Major team, sponsored by Windsor Club 240 won the Chicago Tournament beating the San Jose Sharks 3-0 in the Championship game with Matthew Renaud picking up the shutout. Congratulations to Head Coach Frank Ciampa, his staff and all the players. The Midget Major team sponsored by The Serbian Centre won the Motown Cup defeating the Southgate Senators 3-0 in the Championship game with Daniel Klinck picking up the shutout and the tournament MVP award. Congratulations to Head Coach John Riehl, his staff and all the players. Two teams were Finalists in their respective tournaments. The Pee Wee Major team sponsored by Maximum Edge dropped a 2-1 decision to the Streetsville Tigers in the Pittsburgh tournament. The Midget Minor team, sponsored by Windsor Club 240, were also edged 2-1 to the Santa Clara Blackhawks. (WINDSOR, ONTARIO) The tour will begin at 7:45am in Lakeshore, where they will visit the Belle River Lakeshore Arena at 304 Rourke Line Road. From Lakeshore, the team will arrive in Leamington at 9:45am, stopping in at the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex at 249 Sherk Street. Finally, the tour bus will visit Amherstburg at noon, pulling up to the United Communities Credit Union Complex at 3295 Meloche Road. The day will be capped off with an exhibition game against the Mississauga Power in the Auxiliary Gym at the WFCU Centre at 5:30pm. There is very limited space for the public. CANADA’S NATIONAL MEN’S UNDER-18 TEAM WINS GOLD MEDAL AT 2013 IIHF ICE HOCKEY U18 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

SOCHI, Russia – Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team has won the gold medal at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship after a 3-2 win over the United States in Sunday’s gold medal game.

The gold medal is Canada’s third all-time at the world championship. Overall, Canada has won five medals since first taking part in 2002: three gold (2003, 2008, 2013), one silver (2005) and one bronze (2012).

Canada finished first in Group B in the preliminary round with a perfect 4-0 record, recording victories over Slovakia (4-1), Germany (3-1), Switzerland (10-1) and Sweden (6-0).

On Sunday, Laurent Dauphin (Repentigny, Que./Chicoutimi, QMJHL) had a goal and an assist and Frédérik Gauthier (Saint-Lin-Laurentides, Que./Rimouski, QMJHL) scored the winner late in the second period as Canada won despite being outshot 35-12. Madison Bowey (Winnipeg, Man./Kelowna, WHL) scored the other Canadian goal, while Philippe Desrosiers (St-Hyacinthe, Que./Rimouski, QMJHL) made 33 saves.

Dauphin scored the lone goal of the first period before the Americans took the lead with two in the first half of the second period. Canada had just four shots on goal in the middle frame but scored on two of them, with Bowey tying the game at 12:48, followed by Gauthier at 16:26 with the eventual game-winner.

Following the game, forward Connor McDavid (Newmarket, Ont./Erie, OHL) was named Top Forward by the IIHF directorate as well as Most Valuable Player, as selected by the media. McDavid led the tournament in scoring, with 14 points (eight goals, six assists) in seven games.

STORM DERAIL WINDSOR EXPRESS IN 3RD GAME OF SEMI-FINALS

SUMMERSIDE, PEI - The Windsor Express dropped game three of their National Basketball League of Canada semifinal series against the Summerside Storm, 112-84, at the WFCU Centre, March 28.


The win gives the Storm a 2-1 lead in the series and puts the Express on the brink of elimination. Game three will be in Windsor on Saturday, March 30. Tip-off is 7pm EST/ 8pm AST.

The Express were outscored in every quarter of the pivotal match-up and were out-rebounded as well. In the first half, Summerside shot 51 per cent from the field compared to Windsor's 27.

Antoine Tisby led the charge for the Storm with 23 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Darren Duncan led the Express in most statistical categories, scoring 14 points, dishing out 11 assists, swiping six steals and grabbing four rebounds while taking two charges on defense.

Greg Surmacz had a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with 10 points. Chris Commons had 13 points and hit his first three-pointer of the series.Stefan Bonneau scored 10 points before he left the game in the fourth quarter with an injury. Kevin Loiselle left the game earlier with an injury in the second half and played only 15 minutes.

Eddie Smith had a balanced effort for the Express, hauling down 9 rebounds to go along with his 7 points and 5 assists. Daniel Rose provided some interior offense and defense, scoring nine points, grabbing three rebounds and blocking three shots.

If the Express force game five, it will take place back in Summerside, P.E.I. on April 2nd at Credit Union Place with a 7pm AST tip-off.

WINDSOR EXPRESS LOSE GAME TWO OF SEMI FINALS

SUMMERSIDE, PEI - The Windsor Express dropped game two of their National Basketball League of Canada playoff semifinal series against the Summerside Storm, 114-98, March 26 at Credit Union Place in P.E.I.


Another slow start to the game saw the Express down 12 points at halftime despite a strong effort from DeAndre Thomas, who had 10 points and 8 rebounds through the first two quarters.

Windsor fought back in the third quarter and only trailed by a point heading into the final stanza. A transition basket by Brandon Robinson put the Storm up 104-97 with two minutes remaining.

The Express were led offensively by University of Windsor graduate, Greg Surmacz, who drained four three-pointers in a 21-point effort to go along with his five rebounds and three assists.

Former Oakland University Grizzly, Mike Helms scored 19 points while Darren Duncan followed up his triple-double performance in game one with a double-double in game two, scoring 10 points, dishing out 10 assists while hauling down five rebounds.

Kevin Loiselle led the game in rebounds with 12 while chipping in with 10 points.

Chris Commons scored 10 points for the second straight game but has yet to hit a three-point shot during this series.

Deandre Thomas finished the game 4 points and 11 rebounds.

The series now shifts back to the WFCU Centre in Windsor where games three and four will be played on Thursday, March 28 and Saturday, March 30. Both games tip at 7pm EST.

EXPRESS DEFEATS POWER AND SEALS 7TH STRAIGHT W

WINDSOR, ON - The Windsor Express finished their regular season with a 98-88 win over the Oshawa Power, March 16 at the WFCU Centre.


The Express had already clinched third place and a bye into the National Basketball League of Canada semifinals the night before with a 104-95 victory over the Saint John Mill Rats but there was no lack of effort from both sides. Windsor extended their season-high winning-streak to seven games while the Power's streak of futility continued with their tenth consecutive loss to end the season.

The Express spread their offense around evenly among their active roster players. Mike Helms led all scorers with 18 points, making four three-pointers in the process. Kevin Loiselle had a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds while four other players reached double-digits for the victors.

The player of the game, however, was Anthony Johnson. The Express forward flirted with a triple-double on this evening, scoring 12 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out nine assists.

Richardo Dunkley scored his first points as a member of the Express - a three-pointer. Dunkley is a Ryerson University grad and one of three Canadians on the Express roster.

The Express will have a week to rest before playing game one of the NBL Canada semifinals at Credit Union Place in Summerside, Prince Edward Island on Sunday, March 24. Tip-off is 2pm AST. Game two will take place on Tuesday, March 26 at 7pm AST before the series heads back to Windsor for game three on Thursday, March 28 at the WFCU Centre for a 7pm EST tip-off. Game four, if necessary, will take place in Windsor on Saturday, March 30 at 7pm EST. Finally, if a fifth game is required, it will take place back in Summerside on Tuesday, April 2 at 7pm AST.

WINDSOR EXPRESS MAKE PLAYOFFS IN FIRST YEAR!

WINDSOR, ON - The Windsor Express clinched third place in the National Basketball League of Canada standings and a bye to the semifinals against the Summerside Storm with their 104-95 victory over the Saint John Mill Rats at the WFCU Centre, tonight.


Darren Duncan and Mike Helms shared the team-lead in points with 18.

Kevin Loiselle chipped in 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Chris Commons scored 14 points and Greg Surmacz had a double-double, scoring 12 points and hauling down 12 rebounds.

In a game that saw many lead changes in the second half, it was the play of Stefan Bonneau in the fourth quarter that led to Windsor's nine-point victory. Bonneau came off of the bench and scored seven straight points for the Express to put them ahead in the final minutes and finished with 15 points in only 19 minutes of playing time.

An alley-oop slam dunk started by Duncan and finished by Loiselle put the final touches on the victory in front of an excited crowd at the WFCU.

Mill Rats forward Kenny Jones was dominant during the first three quarters of the game, accumulating 20 points midway through the third but was quieted by the Express defense the rest of the game. Jones finished the night with 24 points. Kevin Francis shook off a rusty shooting display in the first quarter to finish with 17 points.

The win gives the Express a berth in the semifinals against the Summerside Storm, beginning with games one and two on Prince Edward Island, March 24 at 26 at Credit Union Place. As of yet, dates and times for games three and four in Windsor have yet to be announced.

Both the Express and the Storm still have one regular season game remaining on March 16 at home. The Storm play the Halifax Rainmen while the Express take on the Oshawa Power. Both games tip-off at 7pm EST and can be seen live at www.nblcanada.ca

WINDSOR EXPRESS PLAYERS HAVE HEART TO HEART WITH FANS

(WINDSOR, ON) - The Windsor Express held a press conference today at the Holiday Inn Express in which they allowed fans and media to ask candid questions and get honest answers.

Chris Mendes, the team's general manager, started off dedicating their championship efforts to Victor Morris (who formerly wore jersey #5). He acknowledged Vic as still being a part of their team and thanked all the players that were ever a part of the Express as their efforts helped get them to this point.

Bob Bellacicco said that Chris Commons #22 had been known as the silent killer. He asked what changed in the last game to make him more aggressive? Chris said the scoring that he does is for his team and his brothers. "I don't think about myself when I'm scoring. I score for the Windsor Express; to put the team in a better position." If the game requires that he comes out and be more aggressive, that's what he strives to do. After being asked about going to the playoffs, Commons remarked that they have been in the playoffs for the last 3 weeks. Brotherhood and the Express

Greg Surmacz #33 told a Blackburn reporter, "Mid-Season something just clicked. Finally having the right pieces in place obviously helped as well and just guys getting healthy at the right time and coming together. We all sat down and said our common goal for the season was to make it to the playoffs."

Eddy Smith #23 was asked if he hated London. With a huge smile on his face, he responded, "I Love London. The fans and their signs helped me to better my game last week." He said every player brings something different to the game and he always brings his lighthearted smile.

As a rookie, Kevin Loiselle #10 spoke about his defensive game. "I came in and wasn't doing well at the beginning and I just started focusing on playing defense and grabbing rebounds when I saw that the team needed it. Unfortunately Greg went down and I had to step in some big shoes. I knew I was ready to step up to the plate. I came in and showed it. I'm just happy to be here and be a big part of the team. It has been a great experience. I make a lot of mistakes but, I'm just trying to hustle."

Eric Parker #40 was on the starting roster for the Express, left and has now returned. He said his experience has been one of overcoming adversity and paralleled that to the experience of the team itself. He had to fight for a position on the roster against guys that were completely healthy. "My hard work and our hard work has allowed us to get to this point and have a chance to win the championship."

Royal Church, friend and supporter of the Windsor Express announced that Dartis Willis, Owner and CEO, is now one of three finalists for WESPY's Executive of the Year Award.

Come watch the Windsor Express fight to keep their seat as 3rd in the Playoffs. Friday against St.John Millrats and Saturday against the Oshawa Power. Tip-off is 7PM.

WINDSOR EXPRESS STRIKE DOWN LIGHTNING

WINDSOR, ON - The Windsor Express won an exciting overtime thriller, 108-107, over the London Lightning at the WFCU Centre, March 8.

 

Kevin Loiselle split a pair of free throws with two seconds to go in overtime to seal the victory. It was a missed free-throw by London's Jermaine Blackburn with the game tied and one second left in regulation (after a questionable foul call) that gave the Express second life. 

Eddie Smith led all scorers with 27 points, creating fouls and extending a lot of scoring opportunities into three-point plays. 

Chris Commons had 26 points and was a catalyst in the Express comeback late in the fourth quarter, hitting a pair of three-point shots and clutch free throws down the stretch before fouling out in overtime. 

The player of the game, however, was Stefan Bonneau. The reserve point guard scored 22 points, had eight assists and six defensive rebounds while controlling the pace of the game in the final minutes. His two made free throws put the Express up by one with 3 seconds left remaining before Blackburn's heart-stopping missed free throw sent the game to overtime.

University of Windsor graduate Greg Surmacz played well in front of the hometown fans, leading the Express with fourteen rebounds while chipping in with nine points and five assists in over 43 minutes of playing time.

Four Lightning players scored in double-digit figures in the loss, led by Marvin Phillips' 25 points.

The win was Windsor's fifth in a row and tenth in twelve games. They now hold a 20-18 record and sit in third place overall in the National Basketball League of Canada standings. 

The final two games in the regular home season are March 15 and 16 at 7PM when the Express host the St. John Millrats and Oshawa Power.

WINDSOR EXPRESS TURN THE POWER OFF!

(OSHAWA, ON) The Windsor Express blew out the Oshawa Power, 101-65, at the General Motors Centre, March 6.

 

With this win, the Express improve to 19-18 and sit in third place in the National Basketball League of Canada standings with three games left in the regular season.

 

Stefan Bonneau led the Express with 20 points, hitting five three-pointers in the process. 

 

Kevin Loiselle had a double-double by virtue of his game-high 12 rebounds and 12 points. 

 

Four other Express players scored double digits in the win and DeAndre Thomas had a balanced effort, scoring seven points, grabbing five rebounds and leading all players with six assists.

 

Windsor's next game is Friday, March 8 at the WFCU Centre against the London Lightning. Tip-off is 7pm

EXPRESS FIGHTS THE POWER AND WINS

WINDSOR, ON - The Windsor Express defeated the Oshawa Power, 88-85, on a last-second three-point shot made by Darren Duncan in front of the hometown fans at the WFCU Centre, March 2.

 

Duncan, who finished the game with 20 points, 12 assists and four rebounds made the game-winner after the Power had tied the score with only 18 seconds left. The Express held a double-digit lead for most of the game but a well-placed timeout call by Bill Jones set the stage for the last-second theatrics that ensued.

Chris Commons led all Express scorers with 21 points in the victory while newly signed forward DeAndre Thomas contributed five points, seven rebounds and four assists in his first game with Windsor while playing a significant role on the defensive side of the ball.

Recently released forward, Lester Prosper was signed on March 1 by Oshawa and played minimal minutes in his first game with the Power. Mark Gomillia led his team in scoring with 21 points while guard Nick Okorie chipped in 20 points to go along with nine assists.

The Express now hold the fifth and final playoff spot in the National Basketball League of Canada with an 18-18 record, right behind the Power and Halifax Rainmen who both own 18-17 records. 

The Express will head to the General Motors Centre in Oshawa for a rematch on Wednesday, March 6 before heading back home for their final three games of the regular season. 

The Express hosts the London Lightning on Friday, March 8 at 7PM.

Windsor Boxer “Sweet” Sammy El-Mais Takes Gold

The Border City Boxing Club’s “Sweet” Sammy El-Mais travelled recently to Salina, Puerto Rico with the rest of the Canadian Boxing Team for a one-week training camp.  Following the camp, El-Mais travelled to Santiago, Dominican Republic to compete at the 15-country Independence Cup.  El-Mais, the four-time reigning Canadian Heavyweight Champion was hoping to improve upon his Bronze-Medal performance at the 2012 Olympic qualifiers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 

El-Mais narrowly missed an Olympic berth, dropping a three-point decision to Yamil Peralta who advanced to London last summer and is currently ranked in the World’s top ten.  El-Mais was determined not to let another international competition slip away from him.

On February 17, the Canadian team descended upon Santiago, for the Independence Cup.  In a preliminary bout, El-Mais faced Chilean Champion, Miguel Beliz and defeated him by a score of 23-13.

Advancing to the medal rounds, El-Mais met hometown favourite, Manuel de Jesus Marinez.  The Dominican Republic Champion had no answer to El-Mais’ superior hand-speed and wound up with the Silver Medal, dropping an 11-17 decision to El-Mais.

On February 22, in the Final, El-Mais faced the Brazilian Champion, Juan Nogueira.  The crafty southpaw took an early lead against El-Mais; however, El-Mais’ Olympic-Qualifier experience proved the difference, as the Canadian pulled out a 12-11 decision to claim the Gold Medal.

WINDSOR EXPRESS DEMOLISHES ST. JOHN MILLRATS

WINDSOR, ON - The Windsor Express defeated the Saint John Mill Rats, 104-74 on First Responders Appreciation Night at the WFCU Centre, March 1.

 

Mike Helms scored a game-high 25 points and four other Express players reached double-digits in a game that was 58-35 at halftime due to a 28-10 outburst by Windsor in the second quarter. 

Darren Duncan had 13 assists to lead all players in that category. 

The story of the game was the Mill Rats inability to score during long stretches. 

Jerice Crouch and Kenny Jones scored 19 and 17 points for the Mill Rats, respectively.

Currently sitting at 17-18, the outcome of this game and the games that follow will be crucial to Windsor earning a playoff spot.

This win sets up a game with the Oshawa Power at the WFCU Centre, tomorrow, March 2nd at 7PM which could possibly get the Express back to .500.
