18th Annual Hockey for Hospice tournament scores a big win

The 18^th annual Hockey for Hospice tournament has hit a new milestone– 100 participating teams.

Originally conceived as a skate-a-thon by tournament founder, Tim Beaulieu, Hockey for Hospice has grown each year from its humble beginnings. This year’s edition– being played from Dec. 27-29– will include a schedule of 210 games being played at six different arenas over three days. Divisions include Novice, Atom, PeeWee, Bantam, Atom Girls and PeeWee Girls.

Teams from across Windsor and Essex County, as well as teams from Wallaceburg, Tilbury and Chatham-Kent, will see on-ice action for a good cause. All players participating in the tournament raise pledges for The Hospice. Over the past 17 years, these hockey-playing Hospice heroes have raised over $1.6 million. 

“The kids who play in this tournament always go above and beyond,” said Carol Derbyshire, executive director of The Hospice. “It never ceases to amaze me how much effort they put into collecting pledge money and how eager they are to learn about The Hospice and where their pledges are going.”

The Hockey for Hospice tournament will be played at the United Communities Credit Union Complex in Amherstburg, Vollmer Recreational Complex in LaSalle, Tecumseh Arena, Adie Knox Arena in Windsor, Forest Glade Arena and the WFCU Centre. Tournament games begin Friday, Dec. 27 at 8 a.m.

KidSport Windsor Assists 54 Under-Resourced Children; Surpasses First Milestone

Gift of Sport Holiday Campaign to Help Kids Get in the Game!

Windsor, Ontario. KidSport Windsor is pleased to announce that it has reached and surpassed the first milestone in the Chapter’s existence by awarding 54 grants to local under-resourced children in the area. “Thanks to generous gifts of sponsors and donors in our community like Biz X Magazine, Bentall Kennedy (Windsor Crossing) and Boston Pizza, we were able to raise then award $19,945 in funds locally to under-resourced children,” said KidSport Co-Chair, Chuck Smith.

Recently, dreams came true for local family, the Johnson’s where Amy, mother of 6 experienced extensive barriers to sport participation. “As a full-time law student and single mother, the cost is quite prohibitive for my children to play sports. Thanks to KidSport, my sons Theodore, Michael and Keon will be able to play basketball with Core City Hoops and Levi, with Legion Track and Field.” KidSport does more than remove barriers to participation, it creates a foundation for lifelong well-being. “Children are provided with the opportunity to feel and be a part of something bigger than themselves, which is critical to healthy childhoods and productive citizenry,” said Amy Johnson.

Since it’s inception during the KidSport Windsor Family Day Event on Monday, February 18, 2013, KidSport’s number have grown in several diverse ways. The division of 54 represents 30 boys and 24 girls, average age of 7 onto which 36 aboriginal youth belonging to the Can-Am Indian Friendship Centre received the Gift of Sport for the first time, 2 of which went to win a championship with Windsor Minor Lacrosse Association only after picking-up a stick 3 months earlier for the first time. “Thank you for helping us get into Lacrosse,” said Jace Tyler (9). “After we won, we got medals, pizza and pop!”

Next on the docket for KidSport Windsor is the Gift of Sport Holiday Campaign. It is a national fundraising campaign taking place November 20 to January 10, 2013, and raises money, so all Canadian kids have an opportunity to play organized sport. “We are very proud to be part of the solution in helping more children across Canada access sport, become more active, and share the pleasure of sport with others,” said the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport). “Our Government is pleased to support KidSport in making a real difference in the lives of many young Canadians.”

Windsor Boxer “Sweet” Sammy El-Mais Takes Gold

The Border City Boxing Club’s “Sweet” Sammy El-Mais travelled recently to Salina, Puerto Rico with the rest of the Canadian Boxing Team for a one-week training camp.  Following the camp, El-Mais travelled to Santiago, Dominican Republic to compete at the 15-country Independence Cup.  El-Mais, the four-time reigning Canadian Heavyweight Champion was hoping to improve upon his Bronze-Medal performance at the 2012 Olympic qualifiers in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. 

El-Mais narrowly missed an Olympic berth, dropping a three-point decision to Yamil Peralta who advanced to London last summer and is currently ranked in the World’s top ten.  El-Mais was determined not to let another international competition slip away from him.

On February 17, the Canadian team descended upon Santiago, for the Independence Cup.  In a preliminary bout, El-Mais faced Chilean Champion, Miguel Beliz and defeated him by a score of 23-13.

Advancing to the medal rounds, El-Mais met hometown favourite, Manuel de Jesus Marinez.  The Dominican Republic Champion had no answer to El-Mais’ superior hand-speed and wound up with the Silver Medal, dropping an 11-17 decision to El-Mais.

On February 22, in the Final, El-Mais faced the Brazilian Champion, Juan Nogueira.  The crafty southpaw took an early lead against El-Mais; however, El-Mais’ Olympic-Qualifier experience proved the difference, as the Canadian pulled out a 12-11 decision to claim the Gold Medal.

W.O.L.F CAMP FOR ABORIGINAL KIDS MARCH 11-15

KidSport has created a project for Aboriginal youth 7-15years, which will incorporate our FunZone program into community sport camps in various cities across the province. Each week long camp will introduce the participants to organized sport and the clubs and leagues available to them in their community. The camps will also focus on injury prevention, healthy and nutritious living and the consequences of tobacco use. (Participants at these camps will be automatically eligible for a KidSport grant for the upcoming season in the sport of their choice.)

WAY OF LIFE FOREVER.  This is a culturally based camp that will teach all participants the importance of physical activity, healthy eating, healthy relationships and treating the body as a sacred lodge.

CAMP WILL TAKE PLACE MARCH 11^th-MARCH 15^th. Children are to attend THE CAN-AM INDIAN FRIENDSHIP CENTRE at 8:30AM(SHARP) for Transportation to OAKWOOD RECREATION CENTRE.  BREAKFAST, SNACKS and LUNCH are all provided.  Attendance is mandatory to obtain funding for Sporting Activity.

About Marcel Pronovost and A Life in Hockey
“Marcel was the most underrated defenceman ever to play in the league. When he hit you, you were hit. He was a tremendous skater and defensively, he was as good as anyone. He might have been overlooked by the press, but he was never overlooked by his teammates. Years later, I brought him back to Detroit as a coach. He is very knowledgeable and a very astute observer of the game.”—Hall of Fame left-winger Ted Lindsay (Pronovost’s teammate from 1949-57 and 1964-65)

In the spring of 1950, Marcel Pronovost was called up from the minor leagues to play for the Detroit Red Wings during the Stanley Cup playoffs. The 18-year-old defenceman had never seen NHL ice time before, but his performance in the playoffs was so impressive that he took regular turns in the final series against the New York Rangers. That year, Marcel Provonost became the ninth player in history to win a Stanley Cup before playing a single regular-season NHL game.

So began Pronovost’s 65-year career in pro hockey. As a Red Wing he became a star defenceman in Detroit’s golden age, winning three more Stanley Cups between 1952 and 1955, and skating side-by-side with Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, and Terry Sawchuk (who became a lifelong friend). He played a pivotal role in the Toronto Maple Leafs' last Stanley Cup win in 1967. He earned recognition on the NHL's First and Second All-Star Teams. And he has continued to serve the game for decades, becoming one of the few NHLers to have success as a player, a coach, and as a scout.

19th Annual 5k Family Fun Run, Walk or Wheel for FRS

Family Respite Services invites the public to come out and walk, run, or wheel 5km along the Riverside Trail at Riverside Drive and Huron Church, on Saturday, Oct. 27th, 2012.

This event, sponsored by the University of Windsor Student Law Society, was formerly known as the Ambulance Chaser Run. All proceeds will go directly to families caring for children with disabilities in our community.

Participants are encouraged to dress up as their favourite childhood character. There will prizes for fastest times, best costume, and more. There will also be a 100m dash for the kids and a 100m silly dash for those grown-ups who are kids at heart!

WINDSOR'S BORDER CITY BRAWLERS TRAVEL TO MICHIGAN

Windsor’s Roller Derby Travel Team Takes on Michigan’s Eastside Derby Girls

The Great Skate roller rink brings fast-paced roller derby to Roseville, Michigan when the Eastside Derby Girls host Windsor’s Border City Brawlers on Saturday, October 20 for Eastside’s 2012-2013 season home opener.

This is a family friendly event open to all ages and is just a short, 30-minute trip across the border. Doors open at 5:30pm and the first whistle is at 6:30pm. Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Children 12 and under are free. First responders free at the door with I.D.

WFCU CENTRE: THE OFFICIAL HOME OF THE WINDSOR EXPRESS

(WINDSOR, ON) City Council approved the Lease to make WFCU Centre home of The Windsor Express last night.

Chris Mendes, General Manager for the Windsor Express, showed his gratitude, “I would like to thank City Council and Administration for all of their support on their decision to allow us go forward with the WFCU lease as well as the basketball floor. The investment will surely get put to good use in this community. Our plan is to involve this community as much as possible, whether it be volunteering at community events, talking to kids, or shooting hoops with our fans. Banners attached to light standards in and around the city core show Melissa Bishop (Track and Field), Mary Spencer (Boxing), Amanda Reason (Swimming), David Tremblay (Wrestling) and Virginia McLachlan (Paralympics Track and Field).

“These individuals are inspirations for us all”, said Mayor Eddie Francis. “They’re showing us the difference that dedication, mental toughness and hard work can make in a person’s life”.

The banners will stay up until our athletes return from the games. You can see the banners on Ouellette Avenue, Riverside Drive, Chatham Street, Pitt Street, Goyeau Avenue and University Avenue.

On June 3rd 2012, the 21-year-old university student from Toronto started out from Kingston on 1,200-kilometre trek across the province. His journey is called The Pink Portage and it’s inspired by his family’s cancer story. His mother and grandmother are breast cancer survivors but sadly Andrew lost his aunt to the disease in 2005. The purpose of his journey is to raise awareness and funds for all types of cancer research. All proceeds generated by the Pink Portage will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

NBL Canada - Windsor Expansion Bid Approved

(TORONTO, ON) The National Basketball League of Canada is pleased to announce that the City of Windsor expansion bid has been approved for the 2012-2013 season.


After reviewing the Windsor’s ownership group’s application, NBL Canada’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to bring professional basketball to the great City of Windsor.

“I’m truly excited for the City of Windsor being awarded a new professional basketball organization”, said NBL Canada President & CEO, Andre Levingston. “I know the owners, and players will do a tremendous job of supporting the community along with serving as role models for the youth of Windsor. I’m confident the city will embrace this amazing opportunity and support their club.”

With the approval of Windsor, the new organization will become the eighth team in the National Basketball League of Canada.

LaSalle Vipers’ Choose a New Assistant Coach

LaSalle – The LaSalle Vipers are pleased to announce that Cam Crowder will be joining Scott Lehman as assistant coach for the 2012-13 season.

The son of former Boston Bruins player and NHL Hockey Hall of Famer, Keith Crowder, Cam established himself as a player in his own right during his four years with the Essex 73’s. During that time, his team won two Clarence Schmalz Cups and three Great Lakes titles.

“I have known Cam for years,” says Vipers General Manager, Kevin McIntosh. “He brings a solid work ethic to our team. We are very proud to have Cam as part of our Vipers family.”

Cam has distinguished himself as a coach of several minor teams in the area, including Windsor AAA, Essex Bantam and the Alliance U17 development camp.

“Cam is a very mature, well spoken young man with ties to both local business and local hockey,” says Vipers Head Coach, Ryan Donally. “Since playing with the Essex 73's, Cam has taken a very progressive approach in his desire to coach – like working on his high performance certification. Scott Lehman and I are very pleased to have Cam join us on the bench. This completes what I feel will be a very strong coaching staff.”

Cam is a graduate of the University of Windsor where he studied Business with a minor in labour studies.
