NEW SEASON, NEW OWNERS FOR CANADIENS

In Play Magazine
Belle River—The Jr. C Belle River Canadiens will start the 2012-13 hockey season with new owners.

The team was purchased by Cypher Systems Group and will join the LaSalle Jr. B Vipers as part of its sports division.

“This is good news for the team,” says former Canadiens owner Greg McDonough. “The time has come for me to move on and pass the reins to some new blood. It is a great move for the team and for our community. The new owners are also local so it’s great news for hockey in Essex County.”

Cypher Systems Group executive John Savage says very little is expected to change under its ownership. “The Canadiens are a great club with a storied history and a strong, loyal fan base. We are committed to building on this. And as with the Vipers, the Canadiens have an outstanding group of volunteers for which they are forever indebted.”

Savage says Cypher Systems Group has a diverse group of companies but with deep roots in Essex County. “We give back to our communities in a variety of ways; supporting and helping develop and maintain hometown hockey is just one of them. These junior hockey teams are an integral part of the Canadian fabric and we feel privileged to be a part of it.”

Canadiens GM and Coach Mark Seguin looks forward to keeping his focus on the ice. “We have a strong team and we will continue to play hockey at the highest level possible. CSG is a great organization I am looking forward to this partnership both with the owners and with the Vipers.”

WINDSOR HONOURS OUR LOCAL OLYMPIANS

In Play Magazine

The City of Windsor is showing its pride in our local Olympians by displaying the images of our 5 athletes competing in London.

Banners attached to light standards in and around the city core show Melissa Bishop (Track and Field), Mary Spencer (Boxing), Amanda Reason (Swimming), David Tremblay (Wrestling) and Virginia McLachlan (Paralympics Track and Field).

“These individuals are inspirations for us all”, said Mayor Eddie Francis. “They’re showing us the difference that dedication, mental toughness and hard work can make in a person’s life”.

The banners will stay up until our athletes return from the games. You can see the banners on Ouellette Avenue, Riverside Drive, Chatham Street, Pitt Street, Goyeau Avenue and University Avenue.
